Bald eagles are an amazing feat of evolution. With the ability to grab prey in razor sharp talons, they swoop in from above and ambush their meals. Despite its incredible ability to hunt, the bald eagle remains endangered. They had all but disappeared from Southern California due to pollution from a commonly used pesticide DDT (dichloro-diphenenyl-trichloroethane). This pesticide caused a decrease in the strength and structural integrity of their eggs. When the eagles would sit on the eggs to keep them warm, they would break causing the embryo inside to die. The bald eagle was reintroduced into Southern California in the early 80’s and while it is still endangered, it now thrives on the island of Catalina. [schließen]
