The Santa Cruz Island fox is a close relative to the Catalina island fox. This species, endemic to the Santa Cruz Island, is just slightly different from the foxes found on 6 of the 8 Channel Islands. These silly little apex predators really have no fear. We almost tripped on one in the dark walking back from the bathroom. He allowed us to get within feet of him to take his picture. What a little ham! His brother slyly snuck around and stuffed his nose in my wife’s jacket pocket before nuzzling up to her and walking away. These tiny foxes while they appear sweet, can be quite vicious and there are constant scuffles between packs. While the national parks service has done a fantastic job fostering these guys, they remain endangered. Their habitat is small and vulnerable to the effects of global warming, human interaction, and invasive species. It’s magical to get to share space with them, we have to do everything we can to keep them safe. [schließen]
